Common Sense APUSH Topics to Study for Test Day

No, this blog post is not about the â€Å"common sense† that you wish more people had when they were driving (C’mon! Use your signal light, man!). Instead, you should read this blog post if you’re interested in Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, a pamphlet published in 1776 that helped explain revolutionary aims to more common colonists. What was Common Sense? To answer that question, we need to know a little bit about the guy behind Common Sense Thomas Paine. A portrait of Thomas Paine Paine was an intellectual whose political philosophy was rooted in the Enlightenment (think natural rights and self-government). Enlightenment thinkers from John Locke to Montesquieu were championing ideas that put reason and classification above superstition and tradition. The legacy of these ideas was far-reaching, not only for how we think of knowledge today (in terms of academic disciplines) and the emphasis we, as a society, put on scientific reasoning (most of us, anyway). But if you were a regular colonist, some of these ideas could seem a bit abstract. Paine’s Common Sense comes along and makes the argument for revolution – citing Enlightenment ideals as his evidence – in language that an average colonist could understand. Take a look at the following passage: The present time, likewise, is that peculiar time which never happens to a nation but once, viz., the time of forming itself into a government. Most nations have let slip the opportunity, and by that means have been compelled to receive laws from their conquerors, instead of making laws for themselves. First, they had a king, and then a form of government; whereas the articles or charter of government should be formed first, and men delegated to execute them afterwards; but from the errors of other nations let us learn wisdom, and lay hold of the present opportunity — TO BEGIN GOVERNMENT AT THE RIGHT END. When William the Conqueror subdued England, he gave them law at the point of the sword; and, until we consent that the seat of government in America be legally and authoritatively occupied, we shall be in danger of having it filled by some fortunate ruffian, who may treat us in the same manner, and then, where will be our freedom? Where our property? Thomas Paine, â€Å"Of the Present Ability of America: with some Miscellaneous Reflection†, Common Sense Paine does something quite extraordinary here: he makes the case for revolution – and sound government – in terms that people could actually understand. And make no mistake: Paine was arguing for something that was unusual in the 18th century. One could argue whether or not Paine was being too optimistic about the ability of the nascent United States to defend itself against the great British empire, but the effects of this optimistic were clear: Common Sense sold nearly 100,000 copies in 1776. Relative to the population of the 13 original colonies (2.5 million), Common Sense had the largest sale and circulation of any book in the colonies at that time. Common Sense is still in print today. So that’s it? It sold a bunch of copies? Why else does Common Sense matter? Well, first and foremost, selling that many copies is impressive! I’d like to see you try. But even more than that, Common Sense changed the dynamics of the argument for the revolution. If you remember my blog post on salutary neglect and the Navigation Acts, you will know that taxes were a large part of the story that led the colonists to declare independence. However, there were many – many – who argued that taxes were a small price to pay for being a part of the British empire (and a lucrative part at that). They petitioned, unsuccessfully, that the British government should ease the colonists’ tax burden; these individuals were not immediately seeking revolution. This was the case even after the Battle of Lexington and Concord. Many of these Loyalists argued for reconciliation, not rebellion. Common Sense changed the conversation. In this pamphlet, Paine outlined the evils of Great Britain in the form of monarchical and aristocratic tyranny. The colonists were not revolting for revolution’s sake; instead, they were righting a wrong that had been done to them by the mother country. In fact, Paine argued, that Great Britain was not, in fact, the mother country. But Britain is the parent country, say some. Then the more shame upon her conduct. Even brutes do not devour their young, nor savages make war upon their families. Wherefore, the assertion, if true, turns to her reproach; but it happens not to be true, or only partly so, and the phrase PARENT OR MOTHER COUNTRY hath been jesuitically adopted by the King and his parasites, with a low papistical design of gaining an unfair bias on the credulous weakness of our minds. Europe, and not England, is the parent country of America. This new World hath been the asylum for the persecuted lovers of civil and religious liberty from EVERY PART of Europe. Hither have they fled, not from the tender embraces of the mother, but from the cruelty of the monster; and it is so far true of England, that the same tyranny which drove the first emigrants from home, pursues their descendants still. Thomas Paine, â€Å"Thoughts on the Present State of American Affairs†, Common Sense [emphasis added] It is here that we find another impact of Common Sense: changing the pedigree of the fledgling country from that of exclusively British descent to that of broad European heritage. What kinds of questions will I be asked on the APUSH exam about Common Sense? Common Sense cites Enlightenment ideology through which of the following arguments: I. Arguing that reason is more important than any other form of argument. II. Arguing that individuals have the right to distance rebel against unjust governments. III. The Revolutionary War (1775-1783) was an event in history that played a significant role in the way in which the world is structured in modern times. This nine year long war assisted in the establishment of one of the world’s greatest powers, the United States of America. Before†¦show more content†¦Tension between Britain and Colonial America escalated when Britain, whose debt has doubled to 32 million euros, refused to compensate the Americans for the 2 million euros that they accumulated in debt. Britain went as far as implementing various revenue measures in the colonies in an attempt to stabilize their own government. Among these various revenue measures were the writ of assistance, the Sugar Act of 1764, and the Stamp Act of 1765. Through the use of the writ of assistance, which was a general search warrant that permitted officials to search and enter any ship or building with no evidence for suspicion required, the British government aimed to cease colonial trade/ smuggling with the enemy. The use of the writ, which was seen as unconstitutional in the British Parliament, demonstrated the belief that Parliament could alter the constitution at will. This created tension because many colonist believed that Parliament did not have the right to authorize illegal investigations and seizures in private houses. Another revenue measure that sent negative cogitations to the colonists was the Sugar Act of 1764. The Sugar Act placed new tariffs and restrictions on colonial trade. Problem-Solving Courts are Helping to Reform the Justice...

I believe that one of the best reforms to our justice system is the growing number of Problem-Solving Courts. Problem-Solving Courts are specialized courts that focus on specific problems in society, such as drug abuse, prostitution, mental-health, domestic violence, etc (Courts). I have chosen drug courts more specifically to research. According to drugpolicy.org, in 2012 1.55 million people were arrested for non-violent drug charges (Drug Policy Alliance). This is an astounding amount of people being arrested, which is why I believe it is important to have problem-solving courts. With our nation in a recession many states are seeing budget cuts. The National Center for State Courts stated tha t as of 2011, a large number of state and local courts had experienced budget cuts of 15 to 20 percent since 2009 (Griller, 2011). The article also stated that despite the fact that these courts are cost effective in the long run, â€Å"hard-dollar cost-per-case figures are beginning to trump soft-dollar crime-reduction benefits† (Griller, 2011). One idea to help problem solving courts make it through budget cuts is to have the court provide date periodically that shows evidence of rehabilitation, declining jail costs, and how this system is improving neighborhoods. The Seattle Municipal Court has done just this, and has managed to maintain funding to their problem solving courts while there have been budget cuts to the city government, as well as judicial position reductions (Griller, 2011). Currently, drug courts have been proven to be successful at reducing recidivism of offenders. My Experience At The Coast Guard - 956 Words

One of my first experiences in the Coast Guard was a question that went out to the whole company, â€Å"Why do you want to be in the Coast Guard?† Naturally my response was that I wanted to help people. Little did I know at the time, that as I progressed through my career, so too would the focus of my desire to help shift to the people placed under my charge. Starting out I didn’t place much thought into leadership. Luckily, I have had the privilege to serve with several people that have demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout my career. Jeff Dorwart, John Lorentz, Marvin Wells, etc., the list goes on. All of whom have imparted some of their leadership wisdom upon me, either through demonstration or conversation. Performance management is a process a business can put in place to maintain its competitive advantage in the vibrant economic environment. This process will ensure that a company achieves its strategic goals while meeting the needs of the stakeholders and will impact directly on the organization's ability to grow in the long term. Many people tend to disagree that companies and businesses should provide its employees with a conducive environment that supports a worker can improve in skills and grow their career, this may be true, but I am of the contrary opinion. A favorable environment increases employee productivity, the key issue to remember is that a business has its goals and objectives which it formulates during the formulation of the organization's overall strategy and goals (Kramar et al., 2014). A companys goal is to maximize profits in many instances, and a conducive environment is one of the strategic goals a company should have in mind when developing strategies. Providing a conducive working environment has its benefits to business, your workforce is motivated into doing their duties to help the company achieve its strategic objectives. Employee morale is always an issue in many businesses and providing a conducive environment is one method that can be used as a way of ensuring employees are motiv ated. A conducive work environment improves productivity and efficiency since instances of accidents are reduced to a minimum, and as a business, you deal with a healthy workforce. A conducive environment is not only beneficial to employees only but also to the management. Communication between the managers and the workforce is improved. An organization should remember not to focus too much on the employee and forget their goals because employees shift jobs every time they get a better offer somewhere else. Performance based pay has not always been the best method to motivate an employee. First, it is true that an employee is in employment to earn wages which are used to maintain their lives, and that of their families money is a source of empowerment to many people, and ability to make more is everyones wish. Business owners who are not in a position to reward hard working employees with a permanent pay rise usually use this method of performance-based pay to reward the workers with bonuses and sharing profits without straining the finances of their business. However, this approach has been found not to be effective. Though performance-based pay influences the attitudes of workers positively, the method has been determined to put more stress on employees to the extent that is likely to negate its beneficial effects. Employees involved in this particular arrangement feel they are encouraged to work hard and may decrease their job satisfaction. The stress is also likely to lower the prod uctivity of workers. Employees who are hardworking deserve monetary appreciation which should be a long-term plan such as pay increases because, given a better offer somewhere else, they are likely to leave your company (Katzenbach, 2001). Fast food franchise is always demanding for employees to be at their level best. Serving of a large number of customers is always a daunting task to workers. To achieve the best from your staff, in this case, enrich and empower your employees. Job rotation, in this instance, is vital to avoid burnout which lowers productivity of employees. This practice has been tested to be the most sufficient methods of reducing employees complaints and keeping their mind fresh from the daily routines such as in this case the daily routine of serving long queues of customers. The benefits of engaging the employees in job rotation are that it has a positive impact on the job satisfaction, people engagement and retention. Where to Find IB Chemistry Past Papers - Free and Official SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Taking the IB Chemistry exam will be a nerve-wracking experience, but having seen a real IB past paper before taking the actual test will be a huge advantage since you'll have experience with the test format, the length, and style of the test. In this article, I will show you where to find IB Chemistry past papers, both free and paid. I'll also share tips on how to study most effectively using these IB Chemistry past papers. Where to Find Free Tests The IB has been diligent about seeking out and destroying illegally uploaded official papers for the past few years, so a lot of sources that used to be out there are no longer readily available. Currently, the only free official IB Chemistry test legally available is this Chemistry HL paper 3. I have not been able to find any unofficial IB Chemistry past papers (ones created from scratch). If you find any, I strongly advise AGAINST using them, as they may be nothing like the actual IB Chemistry papers. Where to Find Paid Tests The IBO store sells IB Chemistry SL and HL past papers from May 2015 to November 2018. Navigate to the Diploma Program page, then click "Shop Exam Papers" to see all available papers, which can be narrowed by category and time frame. This is the only safe place to get IB Chemistry past papers to download. Each paper and each mark scheme costs $3.00. Buying all of the past papers and mark schemes can be costly, so if you are looking to spend as little as possible, I recommend just purchasing the most recent (November and May 2018) past papers as they will be closest to what you learned. 3 Tips for Using IB Chemistry Past Papers Productively Since each practice IB Chemistry exam will take you 3 hours for SL or 4.5 hours for HL, it's imperative that you get the most out of each test. Here are a few helpful practices to keep in mind when you're taking these papers: #1: Complete papers 1 and 2 in one sitting. The IB Chemistry SL and IB Chemistry HL papers are intense, forcing you to sit and concentrate for two hours for SL and 3 hours and 15 minutes for HL. You need to build up your mental strength so you don't make careless errors by the end of paper 2. By taking the practice tests in one session, you build up your mental strength in preparation for the real test. If you don't have time for a 2 hour or 3 hour 15 minute session, then you can take each paper on separate days. However, you need to obey the next rule: #2: Stick to the exact timing on each part of the exam. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you get used to the stressful timing of this test: IB Chemistry SL: IB Chemistry SL Paper 1- 45 minutes IB Chemistry SL Paper 2- 1 hour 15 minutes IB Chemistry SL Paper 3- 1 hour IB Chemistry HL: IB Chemistry HL Paper 1- 1 hour IB Chemistry HL Paper 2- 2 hours 15 minutes IB Chemistry HL Paper 3- 1 hour 15 minutes In this allotted time, you need to finish: IB Chemistry SL: Paper 1: 30 multiple-choice questions Paper 2: two parts, Section A: answer all of four short responses and Section B: pick one essay question (you choose between three options) Paper 3: Answer all of the questions for your two options: six short response questions that each can have between 2-5 parts IB Chemistry HL: Paper 1: 40 multiple-choice questions Paper 2: two parts, Section A: answer all of four short response questions that each can have between 3-10 parts and Section B: pick two essay questions (you choose between four options) Paper 3: Answer all of the questions for your two options: seven or more short response and essay questions (varies based on the options that you covered in your class) Do not practice with extra time- if you give yourself extra time, you can complete more questions and increase your score. We want to use these practice tests as realistic predictors of your exam score. #3: Check your answers. After you complete a practice exam, you need to review every error you made. Do not skip this step. If you do, you will not learn from your errors, and you will make the same ones on the IB Chemistry test. So make sure to spend at least 1.5 hours reviewing every full practice tests. This may seem like a lot of time, but emphasize quality of learning over quantity of learning.
